What is a Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) and why is it popular among retro gamers? The Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) was released in 1992 as the successor to the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). This gaming console is meant to be connected to the TV. The games (game paks) are purchased separately. The SNES can only play SNES games and not NES or N64 games.
The Super Nintendo was replaced by the Nintendo 64 (N64) in 1997. The main differences included an upgrade of the processor (CPU) from 16-bit to 64-bit and an entirely new controller design.
Back in the day, the games were relatively expensive; adjusted for inflation, these games cost 95 euros when new! Retro gamers usually remember these games from their youth and enjoy playing them again. There are also fans of certain series or publishers who want to play the best games on the Super Nintendo. Popular are the great
Disney games, from the publisher Rare (
Donkey Kong Country), and of course
Super Mario and
Kirby. Games complete in their box are sought after for collecting, especially since these games continue to increase in value every year.

How were the SNES Graphics compared to now?
First of all, an SNES is designed for a TV from the 90s. These TVs were called cathode ray tubes. The connection is made through the antenna cable (RF-Switch), RCA plug, or SCART. HDMI didn't exist back then.
These cathode ray tubes were much smaller than the standard TV screen sizes today. The graphics were also much worse than they are nowadays. So, don't be shocked by the super poor image quality; that's just how it was back in the day.
Tip: Enjoy the gameplay from a distance on your smart TV.
How can I connect a Super Nintendo via HDMI?
You can connect an SNES via HDMI. There are AV2HDMI adapters available for this purpose.
Don't get your hopes up; the adapter won't perform miracles. The graphics will remain from the '90s. But at least you can see it on your smart TV.
The adapter has RCA inputs in yellow, white, and red. It is powered through a USB output from your TV using a provided cable. The adapter has an HDMI output where an HDMI cable should be connected.
Buy AV2HDMI adapter
Buy RF-Switch if you have found a cathode ray tube for your SNES.
